Community Service Over Self Thesis

Decent Essays
Service Over Self, also known as SOS, is the community service opportunity which has made the most significant impact on my life. Service Over Self’s mission is to give back to underserved communities through home repair while providing leadership development opportunities for the youth that attend the camp. The camp has 7-8 week long sessions during the summer and I have attended one session for the past two summers. While attending SOS, I become my best self and I feel empowered due to the encouragement team leaders provide the campers. We are encouraged to climb ladders and get on the roofs of houses, which is what SOS is known for repairing. We take down disintegrating roofs and make them new again while working in the ruthless summer sun,

Having the opportunity to feel as though you’ve truly made a positive impact on the lives of others is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, and this was exactly what I was seeking when I signed up for an eight day community service trip to Puerto Rico. What I ended up receiving, however, was far more enriching, humbling, and life-altering than I had originally expected. Our main task was to make batches of cement for houses a day in the community of Villa del Rillo. Lots of Puerto Rican houses, mostly in the poorer areas, still haven’t recovered from the effects of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island almost three decades ago. Difficult manual labor directly under the oppressive heat for hours every day left us sore, dirty, and tired, but gratified.…

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

Service to others has played a big part of my high school career. I am an instructor for a middle school indoor winterline group and I am specifically in charge of the colorguard members and their work. When I am with the group, I help instruct and show these young students the correct way to do dance, colorguard, and performance. By teaching them, it has lead me to develop my own skills, like communication, leadership, and my own dance and colorguard skills. Also, another reason service is important in my life is because of the relationships I gain.…

I am greatly honored to be one of the selected students who are being considered for the Spring induction of National Honor Society. As a current eleventh grade student, I believe that I have exceeded in demonstrating all four qualities of the National Honor Society. With my previous experience in the National Junior Honor Society, I have bestowed the ideals to my community as of the beginning of my middle school career. This has led me to take pride in the community around me and help create a greater society with the foundation that the National Junior Honor Society has introduced to me. The quality of Service is an ideal that I can directly relate to through personal experience, therefore creating significance in my life.…

I am truly honored as being a nominee for the Easton Chapter National Honor Society. The standards that must be proven to be nominated by this prestigious society are an example of the hard work and dedication I have exemplified in school. Throughout my years of schooling, I have tried my hardest to get good grades, while also demonstrating the characteristics that make up the National Honor Society; they are leadership, service, and character. While I have exhibited all three throughout my educational career, I feel that my service characteristic stands out above the rest. Service can mean many things, but to me, it means helping someone perform a task they can’t complete themselves, sacrificing your time, and assisting the less fortunate.…

Ever since I came to Xaverian in 2013, I have looked forward to being able participate in Christian Senior Service. The fact that Xaverian gives students the opportunity to give back to their community last quarter of their Senior year (and high school career) is extremely invaluable. I have always enjoyed doing service. It is something that I know helps the people I am serving, but also makes me feel good inside. Helping those around me is a desire that comes natural to me.…

In Damen Lopez’s book No Excuses Leadership: Nine Bold Choices Exceptional Leaders Make, Lopez writes about nine bold choices leaders can make in their school that are simple and challenging, but when implemented in their districts, can create cultural change and sustain momentum. These choices are; choose to be a servant leader, choose to be present, choose to communicate with candor, choose to crack the code of the naysayer, choose simplicity, choose to make laughing mandatory, choose to feed and be fed, and choose to go all in. A free extra nugget of information includes “move the baby!” As a high school counselor who currently serves 420 students in a poverty-ridden area of Missouri, I am constantly searching for ways to grow as a servant…

For the past five summers I have volunteered for World Changers. It is a selfless mission trip where participants across America give up a week of their summer to help communities in need. It is a construction based mission trip where teens travel all across America to sleep in churches and schools with the sole purpose of serving others. I have been able help fix up houses by painting, fixing the siding, and repairing porches. Even though just painting a house is not solving any world problems it has been a small way to make a big difference in the homeowner’s life.…

Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…

This summer I went with a few of my fellow Angels to the Archdiocese of Newark to perform community service throughout the surrounding cities of Kearny. We helped out at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, food pantry, cemetery, and elementary schools. Overall, this service trip has had a positive effect on me. Doing service for those who have little to nothing made me appreciate all that I have; it was a real eye opener to reality that not everybody is fortunate enough to be able to live comfortably. When I was at the homeless shelter folding clothes in the basement, most of the clothes had dirt on them, and even mold and bugs.…
