Community Service Observation

Before my junior year in college, the name Occidental College never came to my attention. I never thought of applying to the school until I began communicating with the recruiting coordinator for track and field-Coach Foley. Throughout the year of discussing the school and its athletics program, I had the opportunity to visit the campus, meet the coaches, even eat with some of the athletes in the program. From the moment I stepped foot onto campus until I left that day, I felt something I have yet to feel on a college visit-I felt at home. Community service-being of service to one's community. In high school, part of students' history grade depends on if the student completes the necessary hours of community service (5 hours for 10th and 11th graders & 10 hours for 12th graders). However, some students don't appreciate being involved in a community. All students should view community service as opportunities to give back to something greater than themselves. Having been a boy scout for years, I'm raised to be of service when the moment was convenient. What I admire about community so much is bringing together a group of hard-working, determined helpers who all share the same goal in accomplishing the service. When a group like this comes together, it creates friendships, trust, and positivity; moreover, it's these characteristics that society looks at and says "I need that in my life". My greatest experience of community service is participating in an organization-Monkey Business, which supports children who have family members who are dealing with sort of cancer or life-threatening illness. Partaking in this organization allows me to not only be grateful for the life given to me, but also the opportunity to be a positive role model in these
