Community Service History

I will describe my personal history of community services by first introducing my services in middle school, and then diverging when I reach high school years. Most of my services began as aiding friends in their community services or as forms of tutoring, but more recently, I began to organize and hold various events, as well as volunteer at shelters and hospitals.
In middle school (specifically 8th grade from around December to June), I tutored two classmates in math (Algebra I) for a few hours per month at their houses. They have both moved away from the Fredericksburg area. I tutored Ethan Taylor in Algebra II for approximately half an hour per week by online video chat, as he lives in St. Louis, Missouri. In high school, my community

The location for cardmaking is the Lecture Room at Massaponax High, approximately one hour per year, around the first days of December (freshmen to senior year). Another event from the language department includes gift wrapping for lower income students: the location is normally the cafeteria of Massaponax High, approximately one hour per year, midway into December (freshmen to senior year). Last year, I helped out in another language department service, Christmas Caroling at Golden Living Center. The location is the Golden Living Center (address: 3900 Plank Rd, Fredericksburg, VA 22407), approximately an hour on December 16th, 2015. These events can be confirmed by Ms. Silvestri (no longer works at Massaponax) and Ms. Lanzarone (for the 2015 events), I have signature verification for a few of these …show more content…

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

Outside of my academic activities, I have a strong passion for sports and exercise. As a student-athlete for over 14 years, I have learned the value of hard-work, dedication, and determination. Establishing these invaluable attributes early on made it possible for me to become an NCAA Division III lacrosse athlete. Sports dramatically shaped the person I am today and taught me how to step to work in unison with my teammates to achieve a common goal and simultaneously step up as a leader.…

Giving back to the community is the best way to describe the tutoring I did at Bessemer City Middle School. Bessemer City Middle is a school in a lower socioeconomic area and most of the students are from families who fall below the poverty line. I helped the students during the school day, but homework wasn’t the only thing we worked on. The tutoring sessions were also mentoring sessions, so I served not only as a tutor, but also as a mentor to the students. Once or twice a week I would meet with students who needed extra help in school.…
