In my community, the power structures are the major or local government, the community foundation and corporate community. These three external stakeholders contribute to the community in their own way. The community is very dependent on them and it is important to have a solid relationship with these stakeholders for a community that is affected by poverty and high crime rates.

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

Introduction When I first decided to pursue a degree in social work, my decision was guided by the experience I had volunteering specifically with children. Originally, I believed my purpose within social work would be in the one-to-one interactions because my idea of social work career options was underdeveloped. However, after taking The Social Work Profession, I realize that while a passion for a specific population may guide your interests it does not necessitate a certain job. Specifically, I learned there are three broad practice categories: micro, mezzo, and macro social work from which I can choose.…

There are essentially two primary sources of power: positional power and personal power. As the name implies, positional power means that the leader’s power only comes from their title or position in management within an organization. Personal power, on the other hand, is a result of the leader’s individual influence over others. Personal power is basically a form of earned power in that is gained through the leader’s actions or behaviors toward others, as well as their work. However, the biggest difference between these two sources of power is that personal power also is given to a leader directly by their followership, while positional power is only in accordance with the individual’s official position or title.…
