Community policing is not new as a result of current events. Community policing was first tested by local law enforcement agencies in the 1980’s. Community policing allows the assigned officers to get to know the people they serve and vice versa. In New York City Community policing was implemented in 1990. The homicide rate in 1990 in New York City was 2,245 and after implementing community policing tactics, decreased to 983 in 1996 (“Community Policing Can Be Effective if Properly Practiced”, 2016). Although, this could be merely coincidental considering the US economy at the time.
Those against community policing feel that the tactics involved are unsuccessful. Those individuals argue that a criminal would commit the crime regardless of their relationship with the local police department (“Community Policing May Not Reduce Crime”, 2016). A 2006 study concluded that hiring more officers to meet the requirements of community policing reduced robbery rates .01 percent (“Introduction to Community Policing…,” 2016).
