On October 10, I attended a community event in my hometown of Gate City. The event was called Hometown Festival. It is an annual event, where people all around the community gather to eat, play games and socialize with others. The gathering is sponsored by Holston View United Methodist Church. This is one of the two churches in Gate City and they hold most of all social gatherings. The majority of the people present was members of the church and elderly part of my community. In a more depth view, most of the members of the church were middle aged, white men, who all seemed to be there with their families. I believe that most of the men who did attend were farmers. I came to this observation because of how they talk, dressed, and presented

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

When we fail to comply with certain standards, which are put in place by society we are often shunned from those who choose to comply with these values. After observing different social settings as well as the expected behavior in those settings I choose to focus my attention on ordering etiquette in fast food restaurants. In each of the fast food restaurants I observed in both the Hub and along downtown East College Avenue I noticed three elements of expected behavior. The first was to place an order to your cashier in first person. The second, consumers were expected to pay for their purchases.…

This was the second event in which I attended. I went with my friend Blanca who I had asked if she wanted to attend to learn more about the Deaf community and she gratefully said yes. We arrived at the event a little before five, so we decided to order our food and around the same time our food was done people began to show up. We were all seated near the back of the restaurant near the bathrooms in two long rows. I decided to sit near blanca to help her out incase she needed to say something and was unsure or if she just wanted to learn something.…

For this week’s assignment we had to look up statistics in our county, state and the nation related to certain health related issues within the community. I live in Philadelphia County in Pennsylvania and most of the statistics in my community did not surprise me. Obesity is incredibly high, 67.5% of adults in Philadelphia are obese (Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, 2013) and it comes to no surprise that 28.9% of adults do not get enough physical activity (Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, 2013). The community I chose to research was Chowhound, which is an online community for foodies. The foodie community subjects range from Bars and Restaurants (715,297 posts) to Not About Food (6,376 posts) and several more. The online community can post comments to any of the subjects they choose, adding in their advice, differences and chosen recipes. This site allows for this community to treat it somewhat like a social media site. People will even have some little disagreements within their conversations which sometimes are full-length posts back and forth.…

The article Leveraged Resources and Systems Changes in Community Collaboration by Gabriel Kuperminc and Christopher Harper (2014) emphasizes “the ability of diverse partners to come together to enact systematic changes to improve the health of individuals and communities.” The authors present a variety of examples that shows that changes in policy promote a successful, collaborative leverage of resources from state, federal and private partners. Inter-organizational collaboration is an essential part of community health and empowerment. The proper allocation of resources is attributed to policy implementation and the liability for some partners to accept a risk. The proper funding of programs/projects allows collaborative activities to function…

In summary, according the observation of the targeted community, the following hypotheses are a potential for further evaluation. Those people living on the North side of the area do not have an immediate access to health care. In understanding the needs of the community and identifying problems within the community, it is important for community members to participate in the issue selection process. Not only will issue selection produce community participation, but it will also contribute to community building and community unifying efforts. According to Khinduka’s article (1970), instead of just focusing on the psychological aspect of social change, facilitators should be looking at the socioeconomic issues that could be affecting social change. Joyce also discussed this issue when clients are working with Social Workers or their Family Case Managers. Socioeconomic issues are definitely challenges that contribute to an individual’s willingness to change or be involved…
