The challenge of getting ahead in our society stems from the idea that an individual’s future is solely determined by what and where they come from rather than who they are. Many people, for whatever reason, think that poverty is permanent, that first-generation college students cannot succeed, that only white males can hold advanced positions at work. There are clearly exceptions to all of these stereotypes and every individual has the power to become one of those exceptions. Simply making a goal and figuring out what steps are needed to achieve that goal, will motivate a person to act on that goal and actually give them the chance to succeed. The first step in my research was to explore the neighborhoods within Seattle. In doing so, I was able to put myself in the shoes of the young homebuyers out there today and get a better idea of what was waiting for me after graduation. Seattle has been labeled a city of neighborhoods, and as you travel through it, this becomes apparent almost immediately. The city is made up of more than 120 districts and neighborhoods, each with their own unique history, diverse population, and special events and attractions. The neighborhood that never fails to draw me in is Belltown, the home of various trendy restaurants, boutiques, nightclubs, and residential towers. I prefer the experiences that come with living in the city over the traditional white-picket fence home in the suburbs, which makes Belltown the perfect place for me. The hip, youthful, and vibrant atmosphere of Belltown provides a big city feel while also conveying some aspects of a tightknit community. When looking through the …show more content…
Next however, it was time for me to look at some real data. The Belltown condo fell into Census Tract 80.02, King County, Washington and the Georgetown house was included in Census Tract 109, King County, Washington. In analyzing the data provided for the total and native populations in the United States for both neighborhoods, I found that my choices were supported by the census data. First we have the total population. As I mentioned I prefer the hustle and bustle of the city, and with that comes a large population. The Belltown area has about 3,107 residents, compared to the 1,131 inhabitants of Georgetown. As I mentioned, I believe that a large population provides for an exciting environment, however for those who don’t it is important to point out that Belltown is a location that is capable of comfortably supporting such a large populace. A majority of Belltown occupants live in residential towers, which are capable of holding many people in limited space, creating a less crowded area then one would imagine. The other characteristic of Belltown that offsets its large population, is its location relative of downtown Seattle. Belltown received a walk and transit score of 97, and a bike score of 77. This makes it the third most walkable neighborhood in Seattle despite it’s over 3,000 residents. Next I looked at the age groups present within

A hidden gem in West Seattle, Alki Beach is constantly bustling with families, college students, and everyone in between. The neighborhood stretches from Me-Kwa-Mooks Park in the southwest to the end of Seacrest Park along Harbor Avenue in the northeast, and runs along the beach. It is a geographically interesting area because the neighborhood is elongated and skinny instead of filling in a compact area. Many mainland Seattlites have distinct views of West Seattle’s demographics.…

Markham is a modern, multicultural city that is growing at a rapid rate in both population and development. As population increases, so will the need for housing and recreational space; this is the feature that made Markham’s urban design livable. At 9500 Markham Rd., the construction of Upper Village Condominium is occurring and already has one of the two condominiums built. This is an effective example of successful livability in urban design, because it’s cheaper to live in than a mansion, includes convenient retail shops and surrounded by other commercial land uses, and these buildings can house many families and people in such a small space, therefore a higher population density. The principles of new urbanism and sustainability that are…

I believe we live in a society where the opportunity to be successful is supposed to be available to everyone yet isn’t. Each individual is supposed to have the opportunity to surpass their potential and become the best possible version of themselves yet they don’t. These days, success means graduating high school, going to college, and getting a well-paying job. But the opportunity to go to college isn’t available to everyone making it hard for them to get a well paying job and earn the money they need to survive.…

From the map we can see where people are living, and the roads and highways all lead to this centered dense population. This paper will not only describe this map of Washington D.C. and it’s characteristics, but it will also discuss the people of D.C. and my own thoughts about the city.…

Over the course of the past few months, I have visited a “dive bar” in a strip mall residing in Santa Clara. On Mondays, from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, I visited Woodham’s Sports Lounge (referred to by the patrons as Woodham’s) on their Open Mic night. During these observations, I specifically noted the behavior of those who reside in the bar. In my performance, I will be focusing on the comedians/patrons who repeatedly would take the stage every week. There are three compelling cultural practices that I want to convey through about this community.…

The city of Vancouver is a historical area that was developed from a small trading post. The area underwent a serious expansion after the discovery of gold in the local area. The expansion of the area has made Vancouver a recognizable city across the country. As time has passed, the historical, old fashioned, city of Vancouver has been undergoing gentrification, which is the process of taking low-class areas and renovating them to be suitable for the middle-class lifestyle. As Vancouver has recently been going through this process and there are opinions as to whether it’s a positive or negative action towards the previously historical city.…

All the moves left me feeling less connected with the idea of a neighbourhood I more associated my home with the location of my family and friends rather than the local area near my house and the space that followed the formal construction of a neighbourhood. This feeling is only aided by the neighbourhood that i currently live in, I live on the edge of the Musqueam Band lands in the south of Vancouver. This land holds a complex and important political space in Vancouver and British Columbia. The land was declared as their own officially on June 10th, 1976. The land is technically not city land and is therefore policed by the RCMP and Musqueam Security which makes the neighbourhood feel disconnected from the rest of the city.…

Upon arriving, the atmosphere was very relaxed, and there were numerous people having casual conversations. Southampton is an area of Suffolk County Long Island known for beautiful homes and wonderful living conditions, including many communities/villages of wealthy, upper class citizens. Many people who are unfamiliar with the hamptons location have probably heard about its wealthy society and beautiful mansions/homes due to the media, or television. For example, a popular show of todays society is Keeping Up With The Kardashians; A large Hamptons home owned by the Kardashians has been portrayed in certain episodes, providing a visual of the…

I saturated myself into this virtual community because I found it to be one of the most unusual communities and unlike anything I have or would do. Throughout this study, I decided to use both a naturalistic and participation observation method. I went to various realistic chat rooms where I listened in on conversations as well as tried to communicate with willing individuals. Through these conversations, I came to the realization of the human desire to manage and create unrealistically simplistic relationships.…

On any given day while passing by the campus side entrance of Martin Luther King Library, the main library of San Jose State University, one can hear loud, upbeat music playing, and if one were to look for the location of the music they would notice a group of 3-10 people rhythmically moving to the music or loudly chattering. After spotting this same activity, the group always consisting of what seemed like different people yet always in the same location, I realized that it was not a coincidence, these people were a subgroup of the university that had claimed this spot as their meeting spot. There were many actions and visual cues that made this group stand out; As I mentioned before they played extremely loud music in a very public area,…
