Community Involvement In Dance

Improved Essays
I have been involved in dance since I was three years old and have been a competitive dancer with Port Perry Dance Academy since 2009. As a competitive dancer, I participated individually and on a team training an average of 15 hours per week. In 2014, my senior team and I competed successfully in jazz and lyrical routines, advancing to the National level where we placed in the Top 5.
Through my passion for dance and my evolving skills in being able to connect with younger children, I began to assist with other dance classes. Our dance school was invited to dance with the community Christmas play and my director assigned to me the responsibilities of organizing and rehearsing team practices. I continued to assist with the younger children and their classes, which eventually included the development of a formalized schedule, as I was working towards earning my community involvement hours for high school graduation.

Costumes, songs, and choreography are all factors that I address over the course of a year. In June, I prepare my dancers to perform on stage. Initially, this level of responsibility was an adjustment, as I was never in the primary leadership role before, but the change was comfortable and easy as I found that teaching was a great way to become a role model and a leader for kids who started out where I once was.
Equally important to my responsibility and commitment to the young dancers are the relationships I develop with the parents. I make myself accessible by offering regular feedback and addressing any concerns. I have learned how to manage and balance these commitments and relationships with the other demands I have on my time.
Having been with this dance studio for seven years now, I could not be happier, knowing that I have been a positive influence in the involvement of dance education for young

The short interview with Lauren Anderson is so inspiring that gives me an insight into passion and success as well as motivates me to persist in following my dream. Anderson’s story of her career as a principal ballerina seems quite simple and typical as she started early at seven, soon became a principal dancer of Houston Ballet, and then now is giving back to the society by teaching ballet to children of “underserved” community. However, I believe behind that story are all strenuous efforts and untiring perseverance along with her outstanding talent that kept her lifelong dream alive and made it come true. I can feel in her a great passion for the ballet career in every word she said and every story she told. Because ballet is hard and highly…

Being a senior in showchoir is a challenge! Many of the underclassmen look to you for advice or seek help when they need it. My leadership skills were also pushed last year and this year for “Dancing with the Teachers”, which is a show the showchoir puts on early in the school year. We are split into groups of about 6 or 7 out of the 40 or so members, and then we must select a teacher to be in each of our groups. We, being the seniors, then have to create a mix of songs and a dance to perform in this show.…

It took her seven minute dance on stage to give Tharp the development backbone she needed to continue in the dance career. Martha Graham once said that it takes ten years to become a dancer.…

The leadership role in which I have had the greatest positive influence in has been as the Fine Arts Commissioner in ASB. As the Fine Arts Commissioner, it is my responsibility to showcase the performing arts in any way I possibly can, and while I have successfully done that, I’ve also successfully created a new rally that now occurs every year. Even though last year was my first year on ASB, I still made an impact on my school by taking charge of said new rally. My ASB director wanted to try having an on-campus winter dance before winter break and we figured the best way to promote the new dance would be through a rally. In addition, my ASB director didn’t want to have cheer and dance perform in this rally, for they perform in every other…
