We interviewed Katie Neal, a house manager at Lydia House, a Faith based organization which provides housing and supportive services to women who are struggling financially, have a history of addiction, and/or relational problems. When we inquired about the local community, Katie explained that although the city of Signal Hill has come a long way, the neighborhood continues to struggle with chronic homelessness and violence; sharing that a few weeks earlier, a shooting took place only a few blocks away. It is part of Johnson County which is a fairly large county. The county itself is drastically different from the KC Metro area because it is known to be a very affluent area, especially the south half of Johnson county. Twenty Years at Hull House by Jane Addams modeled a method in social work that existed in contrast to the Charitable Organization Societies (COS). Addams chose to live among the disadvantaged and immigrant populations, seeking a reciprocal relationship that would encourage a symbiotic existence between social classes (p. 59). Where Hull House did not attempt to decide the fate of the poor, COS existed solely to facilitate “friendly visitors” to enter the homes of the poor and use the data they gathered during those visits to decide who was worthy and what sort of services they essentially deserved (Wenocur & Reisch, 1989, p. 31). Jane Addams' vision of a Settlement House influenced the emerging profession of social work by providing services within her community to encourage such symbiosis and by promoting social justice issues to improve people's lives…

One reason why we decided to work with the Dorothy Day House stems from us the importance of family dynamics and how parents want nothing more than to ensure their kids future. Another reason the Dorothy Day House caught our attention was that they house any type of family. Their families are diverse in make-up, size, age, religion and ethnicity but share the common bonds of poverty and homelessness (“Dorothy”). The Dorothy Day House does not criticize people when it comes to housing families, but rather look at what they can do to help. This foundational thinking comes from their Christian namesake, Dorothy Day, whose ideals we too admired.…

Understanding Others Sally is different from me in number of ways, but some of our differences are she is a mother, she refers to herself as a Christian, she still lives in the town she grew up in, and she has a job.…

I see the face of the homeless population every time I go downtown. I see their faces at Forsyth Park on Sunday mornings, when they line up to get a meal.…
