Starting from a young age most people are taught to not retaliate, or turn the other cheek. Sometimes that does not always work out. When Montresor says about Fortunato, “I must not only punish but punish with impunity,” (Poe) he is showing that he has turned this thought over and over in his head. Montresor’s plan for revenge is clear and premeditated. Montresor chooses to act upon his revenge, and he is going to make Fortunato know that it was he who is punishing him. A similar situation occurs in The Veldt. George “heard Peter’s voice outside the door,” George knows that
Peter is outside the door, and Peter is purposely not letting his parents back in their home because he wants his revenge. Peter and Wendy were clearly extremely unhappy with even the idea of their nursery being turned off, and they wanted their parents to know that. Being right outside of the door and talking loud enough for them to hear is almost a form of mockery; just like how Fortunato wanted to make it clear that he was the punisher.
Within a community, trust is built and established, but if people are too trusting, the bond is easily broken. All people, no matter how skeptical they may be, have a
