Gentrification is a controversial topic where the urban areas have been affected in. It is the term used for the upper-class men to arrive in what they believe is a degenerating area and take over by buying and increasing rent and property values, which affects the low-income families and small businesses. My classmates and I were assigned to go investigate small shops that were in process of gentrification in the documentary “My Brooklyn” by Kelly Anderson and interview them on what is like to be transferred from where their business was going well.…

Harlem, New York City, is known for the renaissance movement of art and music that emerged during the early 20th century. The “New Negro Movement” embraced African American culture and pride in opposition to the institutionalized and popular racism that followed many black people from the south. Extremely high rents kept tenants in Harlem poor and in this atmosphere, the cycle of oppression and violence was nearly impossible to escape. In the novel The Street, author Ann Petry illuminates the effects of consistent poverty and crime on a young boy named Bub. Petry demonstrates how the cyclical patterns of oppression and violence in impoverished communities desensitizes children as their innocence makes them fall victim of the cycle.…
“We have to clean up our neighborhood, too much trouble prevail. You can hear foul language, you can hear people yell. We have to clean up our neighborhood, violence is all around. A challenge affecting the residents of Morris Heights is violence. According to DNA info (2011), Morris Heights ranks 53rd in ranking for overall violence in New York. Due to drug use and gang activity, shooting incidents rose 24% from 2009 to 2010. Violence in Morris Heights is a human rights issue because it stunts the opportunities of the residents in the community – there are less opportunities to thrive peacefully, the quality of life for inhabitants are lowered due to violent crimes that may end a person’s life, violent incidents may cause a lifelong challenge such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other sicknesses due to rape or serious injury. The quality of the environment is lessened because businesses will be less than likely to provide goods and services to the inhabitants of certain communities, the level of property values decrease because more residents will be driven out and residents will be less educated as to how to change the negative aspects of their neighborhood.…

Prior to studying and having a better understanding of culture, I had a bleak view of one of the communities in which I am a part of, which is the African American community. My views stemmed from my parents, other relatives, and peers, all of whom are a part of the same racial group. Since a majority of our time were spent with those from within the African American community, we would have a wide range of positive and negative experiences. However, the negative experiences were the primary focus and were used to generalize our group. This misguided focus would aid in a conclusion that African Americans as a whole were solely to blame for being lower on a hierarchical basis compared to other racial groups.…

“Everyone who lives there are black, ghetto, poor, dumb, lazy, dirty or a single teen mom. You can hear the neighbors talking through the walls. The rooms are small, and dirty. Every man that lives there doesn't have a job or is a drug dealer. The police are always up there.…
Most murder victims in America are usually black people slaughtered by their own, magazine The Economist says, “Blacks represent 13% of America’s population, yet in 2015 they represented 52% of the slain.” Until now there is not an answer to why young black americans tend to be the ones being affected by this the most, whilst men from other ethnicities do not deal with such problems. The answer lies with a combination of poverty, family imbalance, epidemic of drug use in the wretched inner-urban center districts into which many total darkness s were corral by racialist housing policy, and bad, or non-existent, policing. The last of these, which may be the most important, extends far beyond occasional instances of police brutality.…
THE COLUMBINE MASSACRE: A DAY TO REMEMBER In the earlier days, schools were the safest places for students. Hate List is an astounding novel that follows the aftermath of a school shooting at Garvin High school caused by a troubled teen, Nick Levil. Nick and Valerie created a “hate list” one day to let out their bottled up rage and resentment against their seemingly unfortunate lives. Hundreds of names, places, and objects were on this list in Valerie’s little red notebook.…
