He expresses how soil is one of the most underappreciated resources, and how humans over time have been a prime factor of soil degradation. This book primarily talks about how human infiltration has gradually continued to raise the rate of soil degradation through deforestation, agriculture, poor erosion control, and disinterest in the subject presented. Agricultural soil loss is not because humanity farms but arises from how they farm. Montgomery is a geomorphologist who studies how topography evolves, and how landscapes change throughout geologic time.…

Michael Pollan stated that, “the NASA climate scientist who began sounding the alarm on global warming 20 years ago, we have only 10 years left to start cutting–not just slowing–the amount of carbon we’re emitting or face a different planet.” This proves that the more time we waste, the worse global warming will get. In order to prevent this from happening so drastically, people can start contributing by planting a garden. As said by Michael Pollan, planting a garden is, “one of the most powerful things an individual can do–to reduce your carbon footprint, sure, but more important, to reduce your sense of dependence and dividedness: to change the cheap-energy…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
