Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Center

Selecting an Event Over the course of the semester, our class was told to participate in a community event different from our own culture. It was actually very hard deciding where I should attend, for the fact; I knew very little of what was available in the area. When it came to figuring out what type of event I wanted to attend I knew that I wanted it to be somewhere that I knew that I could learn from to help with my future practice in social work. I eventually decided on attending a Coffee, Cake and True Islam event hosted at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Center.
Details of Experience When it was time to actually enter the center I was honestly nervous. Before arriving, I did a bit more research on what would be viewed as appropriate in attending the community center. Learning that facility was a sacred place that Muslims would go and pray and enjoy each other’s company. I took in consideration to dress modestly and bring a friend along. Once stepping foot inside the center, with a group of other individuals, I was greeted with smiles and constant “hello’s, welcome, come in, and don’t be afraid”. Everyone that greeted me only ensured me that the community center was a place open to all. Shortly after entering the center a man who was an active

I was able to learn about a religion other than my own and how certain views towards another culture can be different once you actually encounter an individual of that culture. I never thought that I would be invited to their environment with such positivity as I did, with hearing of the stereotypes that are associated with their religion. I know that those of the Muslim culture who practice Islam are very involved in charity work and are strong advocates for peace. The strong views towards Muslims being violent was far from my experience. The event even had me consider returning to learn more about

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

“Are my brothers and dad next?” I questioned myself. July 7th, in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, I walked for miles alongside my fellow brothers and sisters to fight for our rights of justice and freedom. Trayvon Martin and Philando Castile are just two victims of the many police brutalities that has happened in the United States. I live in a place where humans of color are still struggling to find equality.…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

I was raised as a Protestant Christian. I grew up in Evans, Georgia, a small town in the heart of the south and a community where most of the people believed in the same things. I knew a few Mormons, a few Muslims, and a few Catholics, but the majority of the people in my circle were either professing Protestant Christians or raised in a culture of Judeo-Christian beliefs. I’ve always enjoyed talking to people about their beliefs, especially when they differ significantly from mine, but it was hard to do this in the small southern town where I was raised. I moved away from Evans in the middle of my freshman year because my dad got a new job in San Antonio, Texas.…

Living in a developed country, people have a great deal of chance to experience the cultural diversity. Usually, people who come from distinct culture will have different behavior and action. Sometimes those behaviors are appropriate for this culture but are not for other cultures. Reading Response #2 In “Making Spaces for Mosques,” Sharene Razack explores the struggles Muslim groups face in creating their own space in urban cities like Toronto and how issues of citizenship, racialization and identity intersect with that struggle. Razack uses the then East York Council’s objection to building a mosque in a vacant factory building to emphasize the “complicated politics of the production of urban space” (Razack, 189). The municipality justified their racist decision by pointing out that the mosque was short of twenty-six parking spaces out of the required 130 spaces (Razack, 186). Additionally, the municipality was also worried that they would lose $90,000 in taxes because places of worship had a tax exempt status (Razack, 188).…
