In working with the community I helped at the Ecumenical Food Pantry that is located at fifty one Main Street, New Castle Maine. I volunteered of September 8th and the 15th 2015. This food pantry’s mission is “to reduce insecurity in the local community, to maintain dignity for those most adversely affected by personal and/or financial hardships or economic conditions, to raise public awareness of food insecurity. To remain and organization staffed exclusively by volunteers.” This food pantry is run by the local volunteers that want to help their local community. Many of these volunteers try to give over 2000 hours yearly. The pantry is open on Tuesdays from 9-11:30. I helped get food prepared that went into the weekly bags, and then placed all the vegetables that were donated from local farmers on the counters to their clients to pick from. There are two of the volunteers that have a truck and they go to the local grocery stores to pick up bread, bake goods and return them to the pantry. These items were also placed on the counters for the clients to choose from. This pantry also helps families with small children that are in need of diapers, they have a table set up weekly for these

Individually and coorpaterly we were able to sort a total of 13,109 pounds of food and provided 8,400 meals. We were able to prepare donations for distribution to over 600 non-profit agencies in metro Atlanta and North Georgia area. I worked together with other volunteers in order to sort, inspect and pack quality groceries. Being part of the community I believe that is is essential for one to become more aware of how serious the food issue is in Atlanta inner cities. I have a better thankfulness of everyone who is involved with the Atlanta food bank because they…

Understanding important concepts and definition Northeast Emergency Food program (NEFP): The Northeast Emergency Food Program (NEFP) is a vital part of the community ministry network of the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO). They meet the urgent food need of the north and northeast Portland neighbors, primarily people living in east Portland. However, they don’t have any geographic boundaries, meaning that they are helping people from all over the world. Each month, they provide services to over 800 families by offering nourishment in the form of welcoming space and full basket of food as well as providing community, job resources, access to gardening materials, community dinners, and more.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

Statistics flashed across a screen, solemn music accompanied a slideshow of scenes showing desolate landscapes and impoverished communities. On screen, a mother held her starving child and a group of girls in mismatched clothes gathered water from a muddy well. We watched a presentation given to us before the service event and listened to the instructor as he described the conditions in other countries. He showed us photos of the people we would be helping during the mission, communities that were in desperate need of donations, supplies, and most importantly, food. The Lifeline food packing mission was my first service experience, which was the case for most of the students who participated, and it as also one of the first glimpses we had of just how bad the situations are in countries where starvation and malnutrition are so common.…

As government assistance decreased, the labour market faced changes that resulted in increased income inequality as many struggled to navigate the precarious labour market (Lewchuk et al., 2013). Canada saw an increase in poverty and food instability at this time. Paradoxically, the increased need for social assistance was met with drastic cuts to government social spending. Community and charity based organizations, such as food banks, soup kitchens and other community initiatives such as the Portland Hotel Society (Mate, 2008), emerged as a short-term response. Canada’s first food bank opened in Edmonton in 1981 and today food banks exist in 508 communities across Canada (Hurtig, 2000).…

For my RISE project, I would like to work on hunger in Massachusetts with an additional interest in hunger in children. I first started working with hunger in seventh grade with my advisory. Since then, I’ve taken a new initiative and began volunteering at A Place To Turn during my free time. Last year, I set up a food drive for them and was able to collect over three hundred items of food. This year, I am hoping to continue with these food drives and collection drives on a larger scale.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
