I live in Alpena, Michigan; it’s a pretty small town. There are plenty of things we could do to make it a better community. For example, if our community would engage in more volunteer work, like helping the Alpena Huron Human Society and cleaning up the streets, Alpena’s appearance and reputation would would be affected in a positive way. To give Alpena a more friendly approach to tourist and people living here we could participate in volunteer work. It’s a great thing you could do that doesn’t cost the community a lot of money, if any at all.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

Project Citizen has been a wonderful experience. That has taught me many things that I can apply to my daily life that I may have never even thought of if I didn’t do Project Citizen. Even though I had a great time doing this project, I learned most people like to do less work and especially if someone is willing to pick up their slack for a better grade. When working in a team it gets a little hard to find motivation unless you all talk and make a clear plan of what people are doing for the group and when they need to have it done. There were times when our group lost focus really easy and we found ourselves scrambling with things that could have been done if we would have just sat down and defined a day that we wanted it done.…

The article Leveraged Resources and Systems Changes in Community Collaboration by Gabriel Kuperminc and Christopher Harper (2014) emphasizes “the ability of diverse partners to come together to enact systematic changes to improve the health of individuals and communities.” The authors present a variety of examples that shows that changes in policy promote a successful, collaborative leverage of resources from state, federal and private partners. Inter-organizational collaboration is an essential part of community health and empowerment. The proper allocation of resources is attributed to policy implementation and the liability for some partners to accept a risk. Collaboration has played a major role both personally and for my community. My first experience with collaborations is when I joined a FIRST robotics team. As you can imagine, I had to work with teammates of every kind in order to produce a final product. However, the more I became involved with the team, the more I started working with people outside the team. For example, the team and I started several new fund raisers that helped promote community collaboration.…
