Community Engaged Student Program Analysis

I have always been a community engaged scholar, maybe not in the actual program, but in the spirt of the program. I have always loved being in the community and learning and helping with what needs to be done. Being part of this program, I believe will help me to be able to find avenues for this passion and give me the resources and ability to do these things in my chosen field. I have had multiple opportunities to be an engaged member of the community, including volunteering and fundraising for a local homeless shelter, food bank, elementary, middle, and high schools, local city councils, and local youth ranches. I have loved all of these opportunities! I became significantly engaged in these after taking part in a community engagement class. During this class, I went into the community once a month and visited local community programs and facilities. In the month of December, my class visited the Ruth House, a homeless shelter for woman and children, a lot of which are women seeking shelter from domestic violence situations. I loved this program and they work that they did, so, I used my leadership positions in local service organizations including Honor Society and The Mayor`s Youth Advisory Council. Sander`s had it right when he said, “The primary purpose of college isn’t learning a specific set of professional skills; the primary purpose of college is to become a learner. In other words, the kind of person you become is much more important than what you learn how to do.” Although the classroom can give us invaluable experiences and useful and important knowledge, we will not always be learners in a classroom, but we will always be learners in the classroom of the community. So, why wouldn`t any student take advantage of every kind of learning opportunity that we can during this time, so we can continue to be Community Engaged Scholars, long after our classroom
