Community Emergency Preparedness and Response
This paper discusses subjects in newspaper articles and scenarios in the Pearson Health Science Neighborhood in season two, episode five in the University of Phoenix student website under the course materials section. A fire began in the Neighborhood community and the residents developed respiratory complications related to the smoke from the fire. The fire continues to thrive even after five days (Pearson health science, 2011). The community lacks an emergency preparedness and response plan and is in need of one. Violet, the school nurse, is assessing Kelsey and she has a fast respiratory rate and is coughing frequently. When Kelsey’s mom is called to come and pick her up from school, the school nurse advises that Kelsey should keep an inhaler at school.
In this scenario, the hospital did not call for extra staff and did not initiate an emergency response team to help accommodate the overflow of patients. This causes added stress to the hospital staff, however this could be due to the shortage of staff and there may have not been extra staff to call in. School officials should have postponed the science fair due to the potential disaster and because of the air pollution and its’ effects on the respiratory system. Public health nurses in the community should monitor the effects that the fire has on the community and report it to government officials to get the help that is necessary.
Public health agencies available in an emergency The local public health agencies that could participate in emergency response include the local health department, local hospitals, emergency medical services, local fire departments, local emergency management services, and the local American Red Cross chapter.
