Community Carriage Campaign Analysis

Establishing legitimization occurs when an entity posses the right to be heard and taken seriously (Simons & Jones, 2015). By choosing two students a part of the Legislative Branch of the SUNY Fredonia Student Association the campaign would establish the legitimacy it needs to be successful. According to the SUNY Fredonia website members of the Legislative Branch are responsible for voting on statute changes, budgetary requests, re-acknowledgements, appointments, and more (Fredonia SA, 2015). These two students hold official positions of power within the university, and also act as informal opinion leaders out the institution. Based off of Recruit the Student, the Community Carriage Campaign believes students are the most effective rhetors to convince other students, because they can understand the audience’s beliefs, attitudes, and values (Smith, 2004).

In these positions the students would embody reason, cavity, and decorum to reduce the psychological distance, separating students and local residents from the university’s administrators (Brock & Green, 2005). The spokespersons must use cold logic and hard facts to show that the campaign’s mentality is the only way of thinking. This combative approach is known as the sage on the stage and has been used effectively in many political campaign (Simons and Jones, 2011).
The yes- but and sage on the stage approach will work to help the SUNY Fredonia administrators understand the student’s perspective because it they are based off logic. The approach is grounded in hard facts that build an ultimate identity of common interests between the three demographics. When trying to convince the other two demographics, the campaign would most likely implement the yes- yes approach, which was previously described in Step II.
