As a resident assistant you are tasked with the roles of being a community builder, policy enforcer, campus resource, crisis responder, and a problem solver. Balancing these roles can be difficult, but the way to balance them is to connect them. Being a community builder does not always mean attending big events, it could mean engaging with residents , accompany them to dinner, walk to class together, or even just hanging out with residents and showing them they have someone on campus they can reach out to. Being a community builder also goes along with being a problem solver.
Being a problem solver means finding the resolution to anything that residents, friends, or even other RA’s may have. But being a problem solver does not always mean conflicts, it could also mean helping them solve problems with academics by giving them resources on campus such as the library, the writing center and tutoring center. If I can not find the resolution to any problem that is brought to my attention I can direct them to other resources or a higher authority that may be able to help them further. Being a policy enforcer is making it safe for students on campus, and communicate with your supervisor about any and all crisis that has occured, or any policy you have enforced. Being a crisis responder isn't always about a medical crisis it can be about a roommate crisis, family problems or someone having suicidal thought. For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

I anticipate my lifestyle changing a small bit, if I was to become a Residential Assistant. Although the position of being an RA comes before any other commitments, I feel that it will still be possible to balance my social life and continually see my friends. The only main change I foresee is that I will have to watch how I act and what I say. I need to set an example and be a role model. People cannot do that if they act irresponsibly and negatively with their friends or residents.…

In this case I am one who support removal people with out homes and to not let them build camps in our neighborhood. Because there are fewer job opportunities in our community I think these people should be moved to a community with more job position available. In the long run if they stay and we help them, whats the chances of them actually finding jobs? Especially because of our declining economy. So with that being said, who knows how long we'll be responsible for helping out these people?…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

I feel they do this because they can share their own experiences to make sure we are as prepared as possible to be a resident assistant. The student staff in the class can also provide us with tips and helpful information in order for us to be top notch resident assistants. The thing I found most interesting from the discussion about student staff on January 8th, was how many people in the class thought that the “The RA is a staff member/Office of Housing and Residence Life employee” function was one of the top. Yes, a resident assistant is an employee, but I would never want to look at it as a job because I want it to be something I thoroughly enjoy. Being a resident assistance would be something that would require a lot of work, but in the end something which makes you feel…

As a first-generation Latina student, I was significantly influenced by the Student Affairs staff at my undergraduate institution. When I arrived to Ramapo College I realized I was not prepared for college-level work, if it was not for the Educational Opportunity Fund Program I would have felt lost and would have struggled both academically and financially. Seeing my mother’s leadership, work ethic, and sacrifices gives me the fuel to one day have a better life by earning my Masters degree and making a difference in my community. A community covenant agreement is valuable in many ways. Living within a community with boundaries assures that the both the staff and study body is working together to achieve common goals in a safe environment. One of the reasons I am pursuing a Christian education is to grow holistically. Through the close interaction with others, I see the potential to grow academically, spiritually and socially. A reasonable set of boundaries facilitates the development of "characteristics and virtues of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit".…
