Community Based Programs
Community based programs allows the police department not to only get involved with the community, but also allows police department to develop a relationship with the community. Since, the City of Palos Verdes Estates has a lot of senior citizen residents and that number is on the rise PVEPD created a program for the senior citizens. This program is called C.A.R.E.S program, which has only been in effect for about 3 years now. C.A.R.E.S. C.A.R.E.S program allows the senior citizen residents to be safe and also allows them to be independent. National night out is where community has the opportunity to get know the officer of the police department as well as learn about all of community the programs that department officers. This event is held on Tuesday in august. This year National Night Out was held on August 2, 2016. For this event the entire city get involved and community has a chance not just talk with police officer and firefighters, but as well as the city mayor and chief of police. National Night Out helps promote community policing as well get involved with community and build a relationship with them. Building a positive relationship with community will help make their neighbor hoods safer and by making their neighborhoods safer will make the city a better place to live. At PVEPD National Night Out event it was a huge hit especially with the children. The kids not only got meet the department police dog, but they also received stickers and got sit in a patrol car. The department held their event of the community in the Malaga Cove Plaza parking lot. The community had the opportunity also have a meal with officers. A variety of different food trucks were hired to provide food service to the people. The event took place from 1600 hours to 2000 …show more content…
Many feel, especially with minority groups feel those police officers are getting off to easily. With the recent police involved shooting and the officer getting cleared, this has caused outrage because the communities feel as though police actions in those shooting are excessive and they should be charged accordingly. The shooting in Ferguson where an officer fatally shoots a young male who happened to be unarmed, the officer was cleared of any wrong doing. This sparked outrage and started the movement of Blacks lives Matter. In the beginning statements from witness told police that Michael Brown had his arms up, but this was proven to be false later on. By the time the statements of witness were reported to false, it was too late. Many still felt that police officer should not have shot the young male. It turns out that deceased individual actually went for the officer’s gun and assaulted the officer, justifying the use of deadly force. In situation like this not all of the information was given and when it was given it was too late. When agency gives out information to public at a reasonably time frame, it will allow the public to have a better understanding of what is going on. When agency tries to with hold information and slowly release information, public with make assumption leading to protests, outcry within the community, and riots that were seen in Ferguson.
