The Argument Essay: The Benefits Of Community Based After School

We have arrived to our third stop, the complex, busy and hectic city, EWP Outcome #3! The third outcome aims "to produce complex, analytic, persuasive arguments that matter in academic contexts." I believe that the first and second major paper demonstrate my ability to derive a complex claim in order to make a compelling argument.

1. The argument is appropriately complex, based in a claim that emerges from and explores a line of inquiry.

In the first major paper, I have produced a complex claim which emerged from an in-depth research that I have done. While creating the lesson plan, I have realized that the lesson plan would make a large impact on the volunteering system in CISC. I mentioned this argument in my introduction, and continued to elaborate it in the essay. As I have mentioned in my essay, I believe "that the learning process of the students in this after-school program could be further developed, but is inhibited by the lack of relationship between the students and volunteers". The aim of the assignment was to create a resource that could help overcome this problem, and as I wrote in my stakes paragraph, I believe that "my quarterly lesson plan can help overcome this problem, as the activities I have carefully planned out focus not only on academics, but also the relationship between the students and the volunteers." Then I continued to elaborate on the efficiency of the lesson plan to convince Ms. Lin on the impacts that it will have on the organization. As I have stated in the stakes paragraph, the lesson plan that I created focuses on team building activities, which can help establish a relationship between the students and the volunteers and "with a more intimate bond, the classroom productivity could be increased and the learning process could be further maximized as the students would be more comfortable with the volunteers …show more content…
The counterargument that I addressed in the paper was that "community-based after-school programs can cause segregation amongst other ethnic groups". I showed my understanding on this argument by providing relevant evidence that supports the claim. Then, after addressing the counterargument, I offered a different perspective, in which I wrote that "the structures of these community-based after-school programs were organized specifically to accommodate the intended populations such as immigrants, low-income families or minorities" and that "the lack of exposure towards other ethnic groups can be pardoned by the sense of familiarity that is offered by the program because living in a foreign and alien place can be extremely hard, especially for immigrant youth." I addressed the concern that people may have regarding racial issues, but I managed to reinforce the benefits of community-based after-school program in my explanation along with evidences that support my claim, to further reinforce the idea that the benefits still outweighs the downside.
