Introduction

Business dictionary.org defines a community as, “self-organized network of people with common agendas, causes, or interests, who collaborate by sharing ideas, inforamtiona and other resources” (2016). In addition to a community, a culture is defined as, integrated patterns of human behavior that include language, thoughts, communications, actions, beliefs, and values (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014, p. 24). Hospital organizations can review problems and issues that specific departments may be experiencing, then following with implemention stratagies for programs that center around a community and cultural action plan. It may be internal, meaning horizontal violence; or external which involves criminal intent, customer/client relationships, or personal relationships. Both types of violence do damage to the individual’s wellness, and can have both emotional and physical reprucussions for their entire lives.

Internal violence. 30 years ago, Judith Meissner came up with the phrase, “nurses eat their young”, and today they are still experiencing this phenomena. Researchers have found that up to 85% of nurses report being victims of internal abuse by other nurses. This can create a barrier to community and cultural change within an organization due to the long-time nurses that have experienced this victimization themselves, and continue to believe that this type of initiation must occur with all entering novice nurses. The nurse victims of horizontal violence may not report to their managers or administration, due to the fear that once they report, more bullying or ostracizing may occur (Robbins, 2015, p. 1).
