ALLEGAN – Today, October 5, 2017, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) along with the Allegan County Health Department (ACHD) reports that a child who had visited the recent Allegan County Fair has tested positive for H3N2 variant (H3N2v) influenza. The fair took place September 8-16, 2017. The incubation period (the time it takes from exposure to illness) for this influenza, like the usual seasonal influenza, is 1 to 7 days; and most commonly 2 days. Therefore, it is unlikely that there will be new cases from direct exposure at the Allegan County Fair. Early treatment works best and may be especially important for people with a high risk condition.…

One possible reason is that Mr I may have got exposed to the influenza viruses either shortly before getting vaccinated or during the two-week period after vaccination (2) which is when the body is still developing immune protection. This means that there is a chance that people such as Mr I may become ill even before they have the beneficial effects of the vaccine taking place. In addition, it is a fact “that there are many different flu viruses that spread and cause illness among people.”…

One of the strengths for increasing this vaccination rate among health care workers is by instituting the first mandatory influence program for all health care workers. In 2004, this medical center was the first to make the annual influenza vaccination a “fitness-for-duty” requirement for every employee. In this setting, all health workers are educated on influenza and the risks if they are not vaccinated.
