Communion Vs Closed Communion

Decent Essays
This controversy is active in some ways. The one I see the most active is within the Catholic and Protestant view of communion. I have a lot of Catholic friends and the view of the Lord’s Supper is a stark difference. I have attended mass with friends in the past, and the reverence that is paid for the Eucharist is much different than what Protestants do for Lord’s supper. One big difference is it is not open communion and only Roman Catholics can take the elements is different. I was raised Missouri Synod Lutheran so a lot of this is not surprising, we practiced closed communion and did a lot of the ceremony before hand. Though, Catholics take it well beyond anything I experienced as a child.

The view of it being much more than just a symbol

The Eucharist becomes the focus of chapters 9 and 10 of the Didache which concerns the thanks over the cup and bread. According to the Didache 9:2, over the cup one would say “We thank you, our Father, for the holy vine of David your servant, which you made known to us through Jesus your servant. To you be the glory forever.” This formula of speech is derived from the Jewish blessing over the wine which in English goes "Blessed art thou, oh Lord our God, King of the universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine.”…

-How would you respond to those who object “There are enough churches already? We should concentrate on improving existing churches.” This is something that have thought about since I seen this assignment. Its something that I honestly feel like has its advantages and it disadvantages based on the location in which you are located. From polytheism to monotheism, trends in religion have endured lots of change. Each new major trend in religion also effects the way the countries and civilizations function. Before I stepped into St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, I thought that attending Catholic Mass would not be all that different from the Protestant services I grew up attending. However, I felt out of place as soon as I walked through the front doors. Everything felt foreign to me; from the way the building was set up, to the way people behaved during the service, to the way everyone exited the church. As an outsider, I felt lost and almost lonely as the masses around me moved in unison and I was left trying to follow along as best I could. I did not feel that Mass was welcome and open as the services of the Protestant churches that I am familiar with.…
