Communicative Arts In High School

I feel that I should be selected as a district-level nominee because I genuinely believe I could add to the Communicative Arts section of the Governor’s Honors Program. I believe I would bring much to the program. Not only do I write above my grade level according to writing tests, I also thrive in group discussion. As can be read in my teacher’s nomination form, I can add much to the discussions that are a huge part of the Communicative Arts. In all the Language Arts classes I have taken, the same thing always happens. The teacher tells the class we will have a discussion and I get excited- what could be more fun than having an analytical conversation about literature with my peers? However, when the discussion actually happens, I find myself frustrated and even bored. While I come prepared to engage in scholarly exploration, my classmates largely refuse to even read the literature for class, much less have intelligent discourse about it. Most of the comments my classmates make are basic and elementary. In addition, my classmates are simply not as passionate about Language Arts as I am. When we read plays together in Literature, I dramatically perform a monologue, many times even …show more content…
As I stated previously, I have been told I write very well. I even enjoy writing non-fiction. When a teacher announces an essay, most of my classmates groan. I, however, smile, because I love to write. I even spend my free time writing for pleasure. I enjoy writing short fictional stories and posting them on the Internet. I write these stories not for Internet fame or glory, but simply because I love writing. This is one reason I am interested in attending the Communicative Arts Governor’s Honors Program. Because I get most of my writing feedback from Internet comments and not people skilled in writing, I feel my writing is not at the level it could be. If I attended the program, I know my writing skills would increase tenfold from the

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

Besides the teamwork and communication skills that I have developed through participation in interscholastic activities, taking part in these events has given me the opportunity to meet new people, step out of my comfort zone, and discover more about myself. I have met many students from other schools through participation in extracurricular activities, and as a result, I have established friendships and other connections with people from all over North Dakota. Interscholastic activities have also helped me overcome my insecurity and step outside my comfort zone. When I was in junior high, I was shy and did not feel comfortable pushing myself beyond what I thought I could do. Today, because of the skills I have developed through activities…

    1) Honestly, I believe that my writing in this class reveals that I am not a great writer and I am not fluent in English, at all. Even though I have passed the California English (or ESL) standard test for English learner or students that have English as a second language, however, I am still not very proficient in the language. For example, I have a difficult time pronouncing the plurals when I read something out loud and I still continue to make simple grammar mistakes in my writing. Furthermore, my recent writing assignments have been improved, thanks to Paper Rater. Additionally, I am very surprised and proud at the same time to think that I can keep up with the high honor expectations in an honor English class.…

My writing isn’t nearly as advanced as I would like it to be, and this is mostly because I don’t write on my free time. I only ever sit down to write when I need to for an assignment or if it is something for work, however, I do occasionally make journal entries, but it is very rare. Even though I don’t write very often, when I do, it isn’t that hard. I ranked myself a six on challenged to gifted writer because I don’t find writing a challenge, but I am not that great at it either. On the other scales I put myself down as a five.…

My experiences with writing have been somewhat limited until I signed up for English 101. I have to admit that English was not my favorite subject in school. I never felt like I was any good at writing, and spelling is still not my strong suit. I always felt like I was better at math. My attitude towards writing was my biggest hindrance to my success.…

To the Members of the Portfolio Committee, When I came to Spelman, I was an English major who lacked confidence in my writing and my intelligence at times. I knew the basics of writing, but not the dynamics. I could write a wonderful essay, but it would lack emotion and true depth. Spelman helped to change my confidence and made me the writer I am today. Reflecting back on my senior year, I was hesitant to become an English major.…

When asked to write about and describe myself I often have to stop and ask myself how would someone who knows me, describe me to someone who doesn’t know me at all. I feel unique would probably be the most fitting adjective for describing Robert Yamane. I enjoy being challenged and never walk away from a problem that I know I can solve. Puzzles are great examples, but more importantly I want to be challenged in the classroom. Which is a huge reason why I want to attend Punahou.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Writing has proven to be a very serious struggle in my academic journey as a whole. I struggle with naturally choosing to write how I speak, and in an academic setting this proves to be very harmful to my grade. This un-academic style of writing cause me to make a 2 on the AP English exam when, if I would have simply taken my time and chosen to write more scholarly, I could have scored a far better grade on the exam and certainly would have been able to exempt English 1101. It is something I know I struggle with, yet I continue to do it. Furthermore, I believe enrolling in Professor Misty Soles English 1101 class truly helped shape my writing to a more collegiate standard.…

After meeting with the principal, we discussed our data and brainstormed somethings we thought could be contributing factors to our low mClass scores in Kindergarten. A common trend we found when looking at individual student data reports, classroom data on the students, and discipline data was that students were having trouble communicating orally, being able to express their thoughts, and an increase in behavior when faced with situations that caused for emotional response. From conversation, data, and identifying trends, the following SIT Goal was created: By the end of the 2018 school year, student’s reading scores will increase 10% in Kindergarten through 2nd grade by addressing students’ social emotional needs as measured through on-going…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
