Background and Research Question:
Technological advances and an increased widespread dependence on the Internet has drastically changed communication and the dispersal of knowledge. Technical innovators have established ways to allow for easier access to technological progressions by creating social media websites, which act as a platform for people to voice their opinions and share their views with little to no restrictions. Social media is defined as an Internet-based website or application that facilitates a user’s ability to share content and connect with others (“Social Media”). The best way to approach this proposal is by the use of observation through selectively chosen focus groups. This is the best method because, in this case, researchers methodically study changes in human behavior over time and note changes in responses. This is different from the other two approaches because unlike the natural and social sciences, this approaches uses only interviews and observations of focus groups to record a change in knowledge based solely on the effects of daily exposure. In this study two focus groups containing 50 adolescents each, consisting of 25 young women and 25 young men in each group would be selectively chosen in relation to their relative closeness to the closest major city center near where they reside. The results from 4 major cities in Texas would be tested, including Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin for 3 month periods. For example, 50 teenage volunteers that live in the Houston area that actively check or use Facebook would comprise Group 1. Group 2 would be made up of 50 teenage volunteers with no Facebook profile. After the groups are comprised, an interview would be conducted that would feature a list of words commonly used on Facebook, like status, tag, poke, profile, wall, friend/unfriend, and follow/unfollow, like, and the teenagers would be asked …show more content…
Good ethical standards would be utilized because the subjects would be volunteers, participating at their own free will, with explicit consent from their parents. No names or personal information about the participants would be released or made public, just results. Also, there would be no discrimination based on race, socioeconomic status, or anything else. The only requirements for participation in the study would be parental consent, confirmed residence in the location’s city, an age in the 13-17 age range, and an open, honest answer about your previous Facebook use. The timing of the entire proposal would be 1 year, because 3 months would be spent in each city and participants would have to provide their own internet or Facebook resource for themselves.
Academic Culture and Discipline:
My research question examines how commonly used terminology and jargon specific to Facebook translates to modern language used by teenagers, ranging from age 13-17. The question belongs to the Humanities Academic Culture and the specific discipline I am focusing on is Modern Language.
Obstacles:
Challenges that may need to be addressed are the possibility of dishonesty during the interviews, which can alter the results. Also, with no incentive to participate, there may be a lack of
