Thank you for your insightful posts, they helped me to reflect on some experiences I had last week at work and think about them in the context of micro and macrosystems. Anna-Lise, I appreciate your description of the importance of standards of care and the importance of communication throughout and across the system, from micro to mesosystems (A. Krippaehne, personal communication, October 3, 2017). Rebecca, you spoke of your disappointment in our system and the poor communication between health systems between caregivers, providers and our various electronic health records (R. Mickel, personal communication, October 8, 2017). Both of your descriptions of the importance of the communication between microsystems within a mesosystem and the failure to communicate well across the macrosystems which make up our larger macrosystem of the healthcare system at large reminded me of a bit of an ahah moment I had last week. I was meeting with a director of a long-term care facility whom we refer patients …show more content…
Additionally, a macrosystem can perform no better than the microsystems of which it is composed (Kosnik & Espinosa, 2003). As nurse leaders, no matter our role, we need to challenge ourselves to think beyond the macrosystem of which we are directly a part of, and to think of how we can positively impact the macrosystem of the entire healthcare system through our work within our own microsystems. With our day to day work, we can lose sight of how the practice changes we implement regularly create ripple effects throughout the healthcare system, even beyond our own macrosystem. By thinking of how to stay ahead of those ripples we can teach our partners in the community to better support our patients when they leave our
