Pharmaceutical sales representatives, also known as drug representatives or pharmaceutical salespeople, provide drug information and product samples to physicians. A pharmaceutical representative typically represents a particular drug or group of drugs from their company and meet with physicians who specialize in that specific medical field. In comparison to pharmaceutical sales, agricultural sales representatives sell equipment used for growing food and raising animals on farms and ranches, and they also sell medications for animals. Wainwright says that there is no typical day at work. A pharmaceutical sales representative is expected to have flexible schedules and also attend meetings out of normal hours. For example, their mornings could start with breakfast with a physician at 7:30 a.m. before their workday; or their afternoons could be spent making calls in the office or at home, it just depends. In an extreme case, they could potentially go into surgery with the doctor to inform them of the medication their administering. Mr. Wainwright said that this career requires you to constantly read and learn to help save lives. One insight that Mr. Wainwright said that really stuck with me is, “Doctors a little about a lot and pharmaceutical sales reps know a lot about a little.” Which means that doctors know a little bit information about different drugs but sales representatives specialize in their specific drugs. After discussing the daily tasks and expectations of a pharmaceutical sales representative, he told me why pharmaceutical sales is a great career. The career of pharmaceutical sales is recession proof, which means that there will always be a job in pharmaceutical sales because people will always need drugs to treat their illnesses. Another reason why the field of pharmaceutical sales is a great career for me because the it’s all about communication even though it’s pharmaceutics.
