Working Definition of Lens: Interpersonal communication is a process involving multiple people sending, receiving, interpreting, and responding to various symbols, some verbal and some nonverbal, in an attempt to effectively communicate. Interpersonal communication is transactional and its theories center around people responding to and sending a multitude of messages as communication occurs.

For example, the couple holds opposing views about stability and change. When April tries to plan a night of fun but Andy just wants to spend the night off, April uses his bucket list to convince him that a night of spontaneity would be good for them. However, the two discover the balance between spending time with others and spending time alone immediately after marriage. The couple enjoys others being around so long as they can branch off by themselves, as evidenced when Andy and April spend the day to work as one unified and effective team within a larger and less unified team to save Ron Swanson from being audited by his ex-wife. Lastly, their viewpoints on how open they ought to be are often in contrast. When April and Andy have yet to become a couple, Andy’s continued openness initially contradicts the way April rarely shares anything. Her expectation of others doing likewise ultimately leads to April considering the contradiction between her expectation and Andy’s action as amusing. When asked to describe Andy, she quickly calls him “funny” due to the contradiction. Furthermore, as their relationship continues, April becomes more open and they strike a balance of expression.
