Communication is essential in all businesses. Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages. It is so important that it can determine whether you are successful or unsuccessful in your business profession. Good communication is practical, factual, concise, and efficient information.
The communication model is an eight step road map that provides a practical overview of the process. The eight steps are: the sender has an idea, the sender encodes the idea as a message, the sender produces the message in a transmittable medium, the sender transmits the message through a channel, the audience receives the message, the receiver decodes the message, the receiver responds, and the receiver provides feedback. Not all people consider listening to be a skill, although to be a great leader you have to be a great listener. Eighty-percent of top executives say that listening is the most important skill needed to get things done (Bovee 40). To listen affectively, you must complete the following five steps: Receiving, decoding, remembering, evaluating, and responding. Leaving out one of these steps could break down the listening process which would result in ineffective results. Most people are not good listeners. Typically, people listen at 25 percent efficiency rate or less and remembering only about half of what’s been said in a ten minute conversation. The barriers that most people struggle with are physical reception, selective listening, prejudgment or defensiveness, selective perception, little common ground, and memory problems. Business etiquette includes a variety of behaviors, habits, and aspects of nonverbal communication. Business etiquette is a long list of rules that can be hard to remember. However, you can get by in most situations by remembering to be aware of your effect on others and treating everyone with respect. A few examples of inappropriate behaviors: coming to work under the influence of drugs or alcohol, engaging in unethical practices such as misusing company funds, showing a lack of respect to peers, using foul language, complaining publicly about your organization, engaging in divisive gossip, violating confidentiality.
