Communication is essential in life, it’s what and how people understand each other’s. We could say that communication makes a major part of our active life. After all, what would your life be without communication? This is why people spend so much of their time communicating, whether face-to-face or electronically. Communicating effectively is to use behaviors that achieve the goal of the situation. For example, you want to convince your neighbor to donate money for an after school programs. There are many ways to achieve that goal. You could ask politely because you care about your relationship with your neighbor, or all you really want is the money and just want them to donate. Communication is consider effective if it receives the desired result, response or reaction. Communicating appropriately is to use behaviors that apply in a social situation. It is appropriate to say, “Good, how are you?” in return when somebody asks “How are you?” A good communicator should know to communicating effectively and appropriately. A research done by Sherwyn Morreale states that “In response to what constitutes a competent communicator, out of a list of 21 characteristics and qualities emerged: being a good listener, finding it easy to get along with others, being able to adapt to changing situations, being relaxed and comfortable when speaking, and knowing what one is talking about”.
