Communication is something we do every day. Writing a text message to your Mom is very different from responding to an email from your boss. Both require a different tone and a different level of formality or informality. Identifying when it is appropriate to use a certain tone of communication is vital when trying to get your point across effectively.
When I am in my family and friends discourse group the setting is very informal and casual. It is not uncommon for one of us to end a text messages with an emoji to further emphasize about how we feel about what we are talking about. However, if I were to add something like that in an email to a professor, my credibility and judgment as a student would seriously be in question. The topics we talk about are our general everyday life, the news, TV shows, movies, and music. The reason why we do this is because it shows support of each other’s interests and also just to be able to have the freedom to say how you really feel without judgement. The genres we typically use are text messages, birthday cards, and the occasional letter.
In my Hampton University discourse group, the setting is very different than that of my family and friends group. It is a formal/professional setting amongst professors, faculty, and staff. If you do not use the correct form of communication, you could be seen as rude, disrespectful, and someone who doesn’t take their academic career seriously.
