It can help avoid possible social issues by informing people on possible issues in our future, and how if we do not change now it will affect us. For example climate change, communication has played a huge role in spreading facts about climate change and what we need to do in order to stop our climate from going in a downward spiral towards catastrophic implications. By communicating change before the full affects of climate change occur, we are creating social change in the way we think about climate and what we do to create a better environment for ourselves and generations to come. If we were to wait to communicate about climate change, it could be to late and the repercussions could not be reversed by social change. Last week communication on an international level occurred at the Paris climate change conference, where 140 world leaders gathered to discuss the issues. Our leaders then communicated to us the important information and what we need to do to create a better future. If issues have already risen, communication plays the role of distributing information, creating social change to solve problems. I find that information that is communicated through influential and public figures creates the biggest impact on society, which results with the greatest change. For example, the HIV/AIDS pandemic was greatly overlooked until the famous actor/celebrity Rock Hudson revealed that he was suffering from AIDS to the public. After which, although thousands had already died due to the disease, news coverage increased and more citizens more aware about the pandemic and research increased. Although as we learned in class, the initial Abstinent, Be faithful, Condom (ABC) strategy didn’t enact proper social change and has been criticized, the revelation and death of Rock Hudson did create some form to action and social change towards the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Communication for social change also has the greatest impact when it is spread with mediums and platforms that have credibility and a history of distributing the proper message. The information must be encoded and decoded properly in order to create positive change. If the information being communicated is decoded wrongfully than the chance of creating social change is greatly diminished.
