In India, cell phones are utilized by health care providers to communicate and spread information to their tuberculosis patients. This benefit’s the patients who do not want to or are unable to make face to face appointments. Some may be too embarrassed of their disease to seek medical advice. Cell phones allow these patients to receive important medical advice about foods and side effects without the visit. A cell phone can also be used by one who is unable to make the journey to the health care professionals. In a study of 150 patients, 18% preferred mobile communication as opposed to a direct and personal visit. Cell phones are also used in the opposite fashion. Health care workers are able to contact numerous patients via a cell phone in order to receive updates from the patient on a daily basis. Cell phones can also be used to send motivational as well as educational information by way of Short Message Service, or SMS. The study suggests that there are multiple ways in which cell phones may be used in the care of tuberculosis patients but that more research is needed.
