Communication is one of the most important activities we do as humans. Everyday millions of people send and receive bits of information, be it via e-mail, text messaging, tweeting, or even talking to another human. Thanks to technology, communication and the transfer of information can occur in what seems like an instant. It goes without saying that communication is a necessary skill one should work on. We should all strive to be better communicators. We must understand that this will be a process. One must be able to inter-act with others; this involves learning certain people skills, because communication is not one way. Since communication does not happen in a vacuum, it would serve one to know themselves and their style of communication.

My strongest strength would be my ability to listen. I try my very best to give others, who are talking with me, my undivided attention. I try to mirror the individuals to whom I am speaking with. For example, if a small child comes up to me, I get down on one knee, trying to get on their level. I try to actively listen. In other words, I ask open-ended question, usually clarifying ones. This allows the individual the opportunity to express himself or herself more fully. In all honesty, I do this for personal reasons. My family members will stay on the phone with me for hours. Since we are on the phone I must use active listening skills, so that they know that I am trying to understand what they are trying to say. Unfortunately, I have a barrier in my communication with them. This is a weakness in regard to my family and communication. I placate. I do not like conflict and will take the blame so that the members of my family will be happy with me. This arises from my being the youngest of three girls.
