When Communication Methods Fail
Communication is a skill that is learned with practice and it can be improved with training. Many people do not understand the many forms of communication so they prefer to lose a relationship rather than use communication coping skills to better that relationship. Thus, is the case in the film Wolf of Wall Street, with Jordan and Naomi, a newlywed couple that discover that it takes more than money and a good sex life to make their relationship work. This couple fails to understand that communication is key, and that it is a necessity, it is far more important rather than placing all interests in the materialistic extras. Even more, they also shared a lot of physical intimacy in the beginning of the film affection and touch were both displayed. Physical attraction is what made both Naomi and Jordan interested in one another. Therefore, when the couple reached the point of actually making their partnership work they had issues. Naomi and Jordan did not demonstrate a vast amount of an intimate relationship. This couple encounters many conflicts as they approach the downfall of Jordan with the law. For starters, Naomi and Jordan lose the language that they constructed and at that point cannot carry on a conversation with each other. The reason for the downfall of their language is in big part Naomi losing trust in Jordan. “[C]redibility is a perception that is influenced not only by a person’s credentials but also by his or her actions or words.” (Floyd 156). She no longer feels a connection with him and their language has failed. Even more, towards the end of the film, Naomi and Jordan have the biggest fight of their marriage when the divorce is brought into the conversation by Naomi. This confrontation turns into a huge fight that even manages to get physical. Allowing a fight to turn physical proves that the couple can no longer communicate when it regards emotions. “[…] [V]iolent individuals are deficient in social skill, such as communication and problem-solving skills, and the perpetrator may resort to violence as an attempt to deal with high-conflict-marital interactions. ( Ronan Dreer Dollard Ronan 132). After distrust and conflicts that these individuals faced they become an example of how a relationship can be destroyed without proper interpersonal communication
