After the implausible development of technology, social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn emerged to play indispensable roles in our lives. In fact, there are three billion Internet users in the world that take up more than 45 percent of the total population. Among the many Internet users, nearly 2.1 billion of people have some type of social media accounts in their smartphones or tablets. Social media is crucial to our society, Sally Kohn spoke in her TED talk “Don’t like clickbait? Don’t click” that clicking is no longer a private act, it is a public act that as more of what we click and see gets attention, it starts to reshape our culture and society. I am able to constantly keep in touch with my family and friends who live thousands of miles away from me. Furthermore, social media is a place that alleviates communication barriers. We live in the era that people are able to share their thoughts and perspectives on different topics with audiences who came from different backgrounds and be able to question each other’s opinion. For instance, nowadays people can attend conferences that are held online. In this way, people who do not have enough money to travel still are able to attend the conference without needing to spend on traveling fee. However, people argue that social media has negative impact such as the absence of face-to-face interaction. People feel that there are no needs to go outdoors and meet people when they can feel connected to others over social networks. People also feel that they have met them because they browse their friends and family’s photographs online. Social media grants people intimacy connections yet it also causes them to neglect the need of physical interactions. Moreover, many social media do not provide protection for adequate privacy. For instance, my sister had an experience of someone stealing her pictures from her social media account online and using them without her permission to give her a bad reputation when she was a potential candidate for a beauty contest in Japan. People can take an immoral action because it is anonymous and think that they will never be caught. Social media are advancing but there are still unexpected consequences of the
