Communication: The Key to a Successful Relationship Communication is an essential element of everyday human life. It is important to all relationships as it allows people to share their thoughts, ideas, feelings and views with others around them. In order to maintain a healthy and successful relationship, communication must be involved. Communication takes many forms and is expressed in many different ways. Communication occurs within many relationships whether it may be between coworkers in the workplace, within members of the family, between teachers and students and many other relations. A deeper look into the communication in a relationship and types of communication will follow. There are many forms and types of communication that occur within a relationship in order for it to be successful and effective. The most common types of communication are broken down into two categories: verbal and non-verbal communication. According to Lucas, “Verbal communication encompasses any form of communication involving spoken words.” Some examples of verbal communication include oral communication such as causal talk between friends, family or coworkers, speeches, announcements, presentations and more. Verbal communication is used when expressing one’s feelings, thoughts, concerns, views and problems with the other person or people. Verbal communication is the most common form of communication in our everyday lives and it is extremely vital in a relationship in many ways.
