Effective Communication Elements

Communication is key! As educators we must constantly communicate with stakeholders in order to ensure the students all around success. However, not all communication is effective. There are many basic dos and don’ts that make communicating with colleagues and families effective.
First and foremost, in order to make the most of meetings and interactions it is important to be aware of basic communication elements. During a meeting both parties must remain focused. During interactions it is easy to get distracted and stray from one topic to another. For instance, when talking to parents about how their child struggles with homework it is easy for them to stray and talk about their hardships. As the teacher you must make sure that the student is the main focus of the conversation. What other discussions are being had the problem at hand is never solved. If an educator is not sure how to reach a particular student their best resources are there fellow teachers. They can meet with the student’s other teachers and compare strategies that have work, or have not worked. In order to maintain good communication teachers should meet regularly to discuses student progress and assessment outcomes as a group. This ensures that all teachers are on the same page and it also allows them to share challenges with the lesson so they can make changes for the following year. When co-teaching communication between the two teachers must be on going. In order to properly provide the class with instruction the two teachers must understand their role and responsibilities. When talking to colleagues everyone involved must maintain respect for each other. When on school grounds everyone is equal and can learn from each other.
