Common Theme in delirium and Romeo and Juliet Greek philosopher Socrates once said, “The hottest love has the coldest end.” and American theologian Tryon Edwards said, “Sinful and forbidden pleasures are like poisoned bread; they may satisfy appetite for the moment, but there is death in them at the end.” Both quotes convince that forbidden love can bring atrocious experiences. If no one’s love was forbidden then nothing would have to be hidden from anyone and there would be fewer consequences. Seen in Shakespeare’s drama Romeo and Juliet, two young lovers hide their feelings for the feud between their families, and Lauren Oliver’s book delirium, in which everyone's love is prohibited and considered a disease. In Act I, scene V, Romeo and Juliet meet at the party and fall in love at first sight without knowing they were from two different families that had a feud between them, line 51 “For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” This shows how Romeo thought Juliet was the most beautiful girl at the party, falling in love with her, and not knowing the consequences. This is important because there was a feud between Romeo’s and Juliet’s families, neither of them were aware of whose family they were from until the party is over. Another example later in the text from Romeo and Juliet, after they both meet up again and plan to fake Juliet’s death, they both end up at her tomb, Juliet sleeping and Romeo searching for her, because they were taking their chances, Romeo finds Paris, the guy that Juliet was supposed to marry before faking her death. Act V, scene III, “Wilt thou provoke me? Then have it at thee boy.” says Romeo to Paris as they begin to fight, Paris gets killed. If Romeo’s and Juliet’s love wasn’t forbidden then they wouldn’t have gone through many deaths and arguments. Forbidding love from people that want it can cause damage to many even if it doesn’t seem like a big

When everyone is asked to give an example of Shakespeare, they will usual talk about Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, or even one of the films. One major part of Shakespeare’s work that is frequently undervalued is the sonnets. 5 Months ago I was one of the people mentioned above. When coming into the course, I had minimal information about the sonnets and assumed it was another piece of literature that teachers went on and on about but had no true meaning or value behind it. Once I started reading and scanning the sonnets, to my surprise, not only were they very good reads, they also had many under lying themes that coincided with many of the plays.…
