“Flowers for Algernon” In the book, Flowers for Algernon, you see what it’s like not to have common sense. You see how the character, Charlie, reacts differently after he gets a surgery that brings his IQ up 3 times what it was originally. You see how he starts to encounter different feelings and social skills he did not have before. Charlie, having experienced all of that, has taught others that knowledge leads to happiness. First off, Charlie felt that it was worth it to have experienced life in that way before he died. He is talking to one of his old teachers who is also his very good friend. Charlie writes in a letter, “... Don’t feel sorry for me. I’m glad I had a second chance in life like you said to be smart because I learned a lot …show more content…
three times his original knowledge. Although his knowledge did go up, it soon went back down after a few weeks. So, Charlie once again had a low level of intelligence and said , “If I try reel hard maybe Ill be a littel bit smarter than I was before the operashun. ” (Keyes 18) This shows that Charlie Gordon liked being intelligent, and if he liked it then it must have caused him happiness or pleasure. Finally, Charlie proves that knowledge leads to happiness with the last quote. He wrote progress reports throughout the story, before and after his surgery.
Charlie wrote, “Please . . . please let me not forget how to read and write. . ”(Keyes 17) Charlie is obviously very scared to lose this part of his life and wants to be intelligent. Knowledge leads to happiness. This is true because Charlie said that he was glad to have this experience no matter what the outcome is. Once he started losing his intelligence he said that he would try to gain it back. Lastly, Charlie feared that he would lose his intelligence, meaning that he wanted intelligence and knowledge in his life. This is all of the reasons I feel that Charlie Gordon wanted this surgery, would not have changed his life if he could have, and that Charlie was happy about this
