Blood type is connected to the types of antigenic potential.1 DEA 1.1 is the most common canine antigenic blood.3 A successful match requires that prior to transfusion, the veterinary professional determines the recipient’s and the donor’s DEA 1.1 status. Canine donors should be restricted to a DEA 1.1 negative (-) blood type. DEA 1.1 negative (-) recipient canines should never receive DEA 1.1 positive (+) blood. Recipient canine who are DEA 1.1 positive (+) may receive either DEA 1.1 negative or positive blood.1 Blood typing and crossmatching is essential for all animal transfusions, including but not limited to canines. Transfusions should be administered only with confirmed compatible blood.2 Collected whole blood from the canine donor should not exceed during any 3-4 weeks period more than 20% of their blood volume. A total of 63 ml of anticoagulants and 450 ml of whole blood are contained within one unit of transfused whole blood. The initial dose is 10 to 22 ml/kg, depending on how much the veterinarian desires to increase the patient’s volume of red blood cells to the total volume of blood.3 Fresh whole blood is composed of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and all coagulation factors, albumin and immunoglobulins. He criticized the policy as unscientific, saying that there was no proof to support the claim that blood type differed from race to race. Drew once stated, “I feel that the recent ruling of the United States Army and Navy regarding the refusal of colored blood donors is an indefensible one from any point of view. As you know, there is no scientific basis for the separation of the bloods of different races except on the basis of the individual blood types or groups [Spencie Love, One Blood: The Death and Resurrection of Charles R. Drew (1996), 155-56, quoting as it appeared in Current Biography (1944), 180.].” Other scientists later confirmed his statements, and the government eventually allowed African American volunteers to donate blood, although it was still segregated. Because of his efforts in blood transfusions, in 1977 the American Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C., was renamed the Charles R. Drew Blood…

People have been transferring blood for centuries before World War I, but it was considered to be extremely dangerous with a low success rate. There were many things that could go wrong while connecting two people with a tube and transporting the blood directly from the donor into the receiver. One of the major problems with blood transfusions before World War I was were that no one knew there were different blood types and mixing them could cause a massive activation of the immune system, due to it treating the donor blood cells as foreign invaders, which could potentially lead to shock, kidney failure, circulatory collapse or even death. After the discovery of the different blood types in 1901, by Karl Landsteiner, an American and Austrian biologist and physician, blood transfusions began to become safer and hadve a much higher survival rate. Another huge problem with blood vessel to vessel transfusions was that at the front line, it was all but impossible to administer the blood to a soldier this way and a suicide mission for the doctor.…

One of the biggest decisions someone could ever do is whether to adopt a dog from a rescue group or buy a puppy from a breeder. There are several major differences to consider before making a final choice. While both are viable options, the differences and similarities between adopting and purchasing animals are pronounced and deserve a thorough investigation before choosing the right course of action for your lifestyle.
