American lawyer David Boies explains “Embrace a diversity of ideas. Embrace the fact that you can disagree with people and not be disagreeable. Embrace the fact that you can find common ground - if you disagree on nine out of 10 things, but can find common ground on that 10th, maybe you can make progress. If you can find common ground, you can accomplish great things.” Common ground can be difficult to achieve between parties if your ideas are very different, but you want the same end goal. This can ruin relationships or strengthen them. Something I must often do is find common ground on my high school dance team.
Every year on dance team the seniors pick out the camp clothes we want to order. We wrote out a detailed list of what …show more content…
Before the fitting, we had to decide what warm-up jacket we wanted. The seniors wanted a pullover, three-quarter zip up that was mainly white with blue and black accent colors. Our coach hated the idea of it being white and a pullover. The reason we wanted white is that our pom uniforms are white and it would match the best, and we liked the pullover style. In the future, these skills will help with my career. I want to be a researcher, and communicating with my boss and co-workers will benefit me because I can ask questions to advance my knowledge of what we are researching. I will also need to discuss my research with other people to brainstorm and to come to a conclusion on the subject. The most important thing I learned about communication is that you should not communicate to people about private matters to people not in the situation. In the long run, it causes more dysfunction than when the problem arose. Compromise will help me in the workplace because everyone has ideas and everyone deserves a chance to express them. Sometimes you cannot execute everyone’s ideas, but you can compromise to try a part of everyone’s idea or come up with a plan of action together to attack a project. With these skills, I will be able to make a better work environment with less drama and more progress. I also learned from this experience is you may not get what you want and sometimes it is better to leave it alone. The past is in the past and I want to live for the future. I learned that holding grudges does not benefit anyone. I want to be a progressive person and move forward in my life so I
