“Common Core Testing”
The conditions surrounding the Common Core testing situation in my particular school setting is, roughly sixty-five 3th, 4th, and 5th graders combined opted out of the ELA exam this week. The majority of those kids were from Bangladesh who had not been in the country one year and a day to qualify taking the exam. In my class 12:1:1 3rd-4th grade bridge Special Education self contained class, only 3 took the exam on the first day. The follow day one of the parents now sends in an opt out letter. During these three grueling days kids who opted out were taken out of their classes and grouped together being put in another class which went on a class trip. The kids could not talk at all to one another out of fear of being a distraction or heard thru the walls. They were constantly reminded, “classes are testing.” The childrens lunch break was pushed back by an hour due to the testing. The last day of testing there was no teacher coverage for my group of 4th graders and no classrooms available to house the children. So as I am standing in the hallway by my Assistant Principals office I asked can I just take them to the cafeteria where we were sectioned by grade. During this time the lower grades were having lunch and needed the tables. This became a problem because testing was still going on as well as lunch for the lower grades and we had no where to go. Eventually I took my group to the auditorium but again they now have to sit quietly with no where
