“By 2014, Indiana and Louisiana withdrew from the Common Core State Standards” (ProQuest Staff). Not only are states beginning to withdraw from the Standards many students and parents are opting out of testing in states that have still adopted the Common Core. As a result, district officials try to persuade parents into having their children participate in the State testing to accurately judge if the children are mandatory academic standards, teachers are effectively teaching the proper curriculum, and to see which schools are failing so it can be improved. Without all children participating it is hard to assess what needs to be corrected in school systems. Nevertheless, parents still protest with comments like “Don’t you dare tell parents that these tests will help them…these tests tear our kids down. They don’t lead to success” (Strauss). In contrary, it is not only parents disgusted with these standards, even former high school principals and executive directors disapprove making statements such as “research-based practices that could really help communities of all communities, like early childhood and whole-child initiatives, continue to be ignored while we double down on test-and-punish practices” (Strauss) State testing is scaring children by giving them the indication that the test is the only thing that is going to determine if they pass or fail …show more content…
Above all, Common Core is giving students of all income level brackets an equal opportunity to gain the same quality education. As a result, Common Core standards “are designed to allow students to demonstrate independence, build strong content knowledge, respond to varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline, comprehend as well as critique, value evidence, use technology and digital media strategically and capably, and come to understand other perspectives and cultures” (Allyn). If the children of America are going to be our future, having expectations and goals for them will encourage well-versed knowledgeable adults in the future. Overall, Common Core gives structure and control of education to children, some of which have never had before. At the same time, having guidelines like the Common Core to follow gives safe and supportive atmospheres to children in school so they can advance
