The new set of standards adopted by some states requires teachers to think creatively and to create a lesson plan that coincides with one or more standards. “Why I Love Common Core” by Kyle Schwartz summarizes that because of the new Common Core, teachers have to break down the standards their students are supposed to know, forcing them to think “What is the best way to teach this to my students?” (Schwartz 1). This summarization is saying that teachers have to think through what and how they will teach to their students. To connect back to my thesis, teachers are benefiting because they are forced to think creatively in creating lesson plans, which benefits them by expanding their creativity. Another reason that Common Core benefits teachers is the feeling they get from giving important, well-thought-out lessons to their students based off of the Common Core. Kyle Schwartz from the Washington Post writes in the article “Why I Love Common Core” that “The Common Core Standards are new, different, and challenging. But it is in the struggle that our teachers define what meaningful instruction looks like.” (Schwartz 2). This quote says that in a teacher’s struggle to create fun, interesting ways to teach students the Common Core, teachers feel an amazing sense of accomplishment in providing a meaningful education to their students. This relates back to the thesis, because in providing this meaningful education, teachers are also benefiting, because they are gaining new strategies for how to teach certain students certain subjects. So yes, Common Core does affect teachers in a beneficial way. Teachers can receive a higher creativity level, as well as boost their self-esteem, and some students have found themselves benefiting greatly from Common Core
