Common Core Standards Affect Student Learning

Back in September, even though I believed that all three key shifts in the ELA Common Core Standards, I picked the second shift as a focus. After looking over all the materials, reading the assignments and attending class, I do not believe that we should focus on only one shift. I know strongly believe that all are equally important since almost all the ELA Common Core Standards are interrelated and one leads to another. All of them combine helps students acquire the critical skills that are necessary for their successful participation in the undertaking of the 21st Century Skills. The classroom instruction will have to shift from a teacher- centered to a more student-centered environment. Teachers will take on the role as facilitators rather than lecturers. The teachers work will be more focused on creating and providing appropriate activities for diverse learners and their specific “needs”. The curricula will no longer be the main focus when planning instruction. Student’s performance and level of need will be the factors guiding instruction. I believe that teachers will have more control in selecting appropriate material as well as the necessary strategies to improve the reading proficiency level of students. Students will need opportunities to interact with and immerse themselves in texts that are authentic by using strategies and skills that can be later used in a variety of real life situations. To be able to provide appropriate practice and instruction of various strategies, necessary for students to be successful meeting the Common Core Standards, teachers will need to seek and participate in professional development geared to the
