Common Core Education Standards

Ever since the new Common Core education standards were introduced in 2009, there has been a massive debate over whether it is really benefiting students or simply resulting in various negative effects on many different aspects of the student. There has been an overwhelming amount of backlash on the new standards from students, parents, and even teachers and authoritative figures in the world of education. Despite the not-so-positive views that exist concerning Common Core, there have been some people that believe it is the best way for students to be educated. One of the many negative sides of Common Core is that it destroys different and creative thinking in the minds of students. Although creating similar standards across the entire country could be seen as a benefit in certain ways, what is not considered is the fact that this causes all students to be directed to think in the same way as everybody else. Common Core is closing off original thinking by setting the same goals for every students, despite varying cultures, races, customs, and ethnicities. These new standards are not encouraging students to branch off and think differently, but to follow the same path that all of their peers are taking. One of the main reasons for this is that parents learned the same thing that their children are learning, but in a much different way than in present day due to Common Core, so it is hard for them to understand what their kids are learning. The lessons taught with these new standards, especially regarding math, are overly confusing compared to what most parents know and what they were taught when they were in school, making it difficult for parents to aid their children with homework and other school related matters. Since many parents are unable to assist their children with their education, this causes their relationships to weaken with their kids because they can not relate with them to something as big as education in a child’s
