One article defines the signs of compassion consists of five elements: recognizing suffering, understanding the universality of human suffering, feeling for the person suffering, tolerating uncomfortable feelings, and motivation to act to alleviate suffering (Strauss, Lever Taylor, Gu, Kuyken, Baer, Jones, Cavananagh, 2016). This means that compassion should arise out of love and kindness for other people, not duty and fear. Expression of compassion comes from empathy and patient-centered care that is based on respect for fellow humans.
