Commercialism In Chicago

In Chicago, Culture was booming everywhere, from class, gender, race and even age. Commercialism never took off with most of the working class. They wanted people to see a world where they own a car and a house and where they can own things now and pay for them later. The working class did not fall for this. During this time the people started to realize it was more important to pay for the things they needed to pay for and save the rest for a later date in banks. The workers did use the own now and pay later system, but only on small items like the phonograph. Managements thought it was important for employees to have leisure time, so they could explore and fine new consumer desires. Culture was for everyone and they expressed it in different ways, mostly to feel togetherness with people similar to them. Each race had there own idea of culture and how they related and got together. For example, in Little Sicily people would gather together with the Victrola and play records, dance and gossip with each other like a big party. People would only shop at stores and buy from people of the same race or culture as themselves. This was because they felt their own group would not rip them off. I believe this because for me when ever my family had to move and I felt home sick from my old neighborhood and old friends, I would look for people with similar characteristic of my friend and look for places around that reminded me of my old neighborhood. The people wanted to feel connected to the community so they looked for something they had in common with the community. The people from 1919 to 1939 were hard working people that worked hard and saved their movie. Later they would be able to spend more money on entertainment like buying a phonograph and going to the theaters that would further there togetherness buy giving them more in common with each
